Summer is finally in full swing and residents of Canada have been given the green light to resume outdoor gatherings by health officials. If you’re a musician, the first thought that might have come to mind was, “we can finally have jam sessions!!”. We understand the struggle of dealing with Zoom’s video/audio latency and want to help you get back on track.

Our team at Tom Lee Music want to help ensure that you and your friends are equipped with the essentials that will last for many summers to come. Below are just a few of the possibilities and suggestions to add to your summer jam sessions checklist.

ACOUSTIC GUITAR

Many would argue that one of the most important instruments when it comes to outdoor jam sessions is the acoustic guitar. Its versatility and portability make it the perfect companion at the beach or around the campfire. Various acoustics are able to project bold sounds thanks to the array of wood combinations available. It's important to note that the shape and size of the guitar has a substantial influence on its overall sound. Be sure to visit our article describing crucial elements to pay attention to when picking out your first acoustic guitar,

UKULELE

If you're looking for something small, affordable and easy to hold — the ukulele is the perfect instrument for you! Available in different shapes, colours, and sizes meaning there is bound to be a uke that catches your eye. Aside from being easy on your wallet, the ukulele is one of the easiest instruments to learn no matter your age. With some time and practice, you will develop fundamental skills making it easier for you to transition into instruments like the guitar in the future.

PERCUSSION: CAJON & MARACAS

When it comes to singing within a group of people, it is always helpful to include elements that help keep everyone in tempo. Clapping and snapping quickly become tiring over long periods of time, therefore, having something like the Cajon or Maracas could be very helpful. The core design of a Cajon is basic yet elegant. Striking close to the edge of the box will produce a high pitches tone versus hitting the middle to produce more bass. Maracas on the other hand are a classic and easy instrument to pick up and use to supply rhymic accompaniment.

TAMBOURINE

Tambourines are known to have an extensive, rich history rooted in a wide variety of music. Being a simple instrument to play and learn, one can argue that the versatile instruments can really bring a song to life. Tambourines are commonly known as handheld instruments with parchment/skinhead and metal disks/bells attached to a round frame. It's a fun instrument that can help get everyone involved during a jam session!

HARMONICA

The Harmonica is an instrument that can be used for a variety of musical styles. Alongside its ability to fit in the convenience of your own pocket, the harmonica comes at a modest cost. Its versatility is reflected in the music genres in which the mighty little mouth harp plays a part!

As Billy Joel once said, “Music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music” (Billy Joel).

After over a year of isolation, we are excited to see this new season of music filled with endless amounts of artistry and creativity emerge. We hope this article acts as a catalyst to help revive enthusiasm and collaborations within the music community!
