From Ludwig’s humble beginnings in Chicago, Illinois to its present place at the center of the drumming world, A Century of “The Most Famous Name in Drums” chronicles the ongoing history of the Ludwig Drum Company. As a manufacturer of percussion products and accessories, Ludwig strives to provide quality kits with distinct tonal quality for an affordable price. Ludwig’s drum sets have been used by some of the most legendary drummers in history. These include Ringo Starr, Nick Mason, Keith Moon, and many more..
The Ludwig Drum Company was founded by brothers William and Theobald Ludwig. That was also the year that they created their first bass drum pedal, and their first timpani model was introduced shortly thereafter. The roaring twenties was a decade of innovation for both their drum sets and concert percussion instruments. Early on, Ludwig introduced their renowned Black Beauty Snare Drums, one of the most sought-after snare drum sounds in the recording industry.
The decade that changed the music industry and the face of Ludwig Drums forever was the glorious sixties. Everything changed radically in 1964 when Ringo Starr first appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show playing his Ludwig Black Oyster Pearl drum set. The popularity of Ludwig drums increased tenfold. Another decade of innovation and growth was the seventies, with key artists performing on Ludwig drum kits, including John Bonham from Led Zeppelin. Ludwig expanded their product offerings with even more affordable drums and merged with CG Conn and Selmer in 2002.
Today, Ludwig offers a great range of drum sets that suit players of varying needs and wants. Continuing their passion for bridging the past to the future, they introduced The BreakBeats Kit by Questlove along with the Element and Element Birch series drum kits. One of the most popular Ludwig drums range (and arguably the favourite amongst players) is the Ludwig Legacy Series. Similar to the Ludwig Vintage Select Series, these kits come in an array of finishes, including the sparkle and oyster pearl finishes which have become synonymous with Ludwig drum sets.
