Vancouver Sun Featured Tom Lee Music's Shimmel Glass Piano
Aimed at transpacific guests, an event titled The Best Of The Best took place in the Rocky Mountaineer station recently. Displays included a Sea Ray motor vessel, a yacht-sized Rolls-Royce convertible, jewelry, artworks and three grand pianos from Tom Lee Music. One Steinway had its wood components decorated with Haida motifs. Beside it, a $200,000 Schimmel K213 disposed of wood entirely. Its case, lid, legs and stool were made entirely of Plexiglas, and the instrument was ringed by twinkling lights. Liberace would have loved it.
What those present loved was a performance of Theodor Oesten’s Doll’s Dream by Phoenia Gao, who breezily said she was “almost eight.” Although reportedly playing the piano for only eight months, she won a first prize at the Vancouver Kiwanis Music Festival in April. From the keyboard in the station, she could see an undisputed best of the best.
