Steinway Factory Tour
The Steinway & Sons Factory is located about half an hour’s drive from Manhattan in a city called Astoria near Queens. As we were late due to traffic, the staff was kind enough to bring us through a shortcut to catch up with the rest of the touring guests.
The tour guide, who was a retired engineer from the Steinway factory, gave us an insightful tour from his first-hand experience by showing us each step involved in the production of a Steinway grand piano. The process began with combining thin sheets of wood, laminating them and then bending them to the shape of a grand piano. It is left to dry in a temperature controlled room. When it is ready, we followed closely each step involved in the hand crafting of the piano. With so much attention given to detailed craftsmanship, I can appreciate now why Steinway’s hand-made pianos are the world’s finest pianos! It was one of the highlights of our New York trip.
