Franz Schubert's autograph of the Hungarian Melody was long considered lost until it resurfaced by chance in the 1920s. Only this stroke of luck makes it possible today to understand how Schubert transformed a short melody from what was then Hungary, first into the present bravura piece and later into a four-hand version.
