HANDWERKS MUSIC FANTASY For Guitar Solo By Frederic Hand

"I was commissioned by the wonderful guitarist Tomomi Kohno to compose a new work for her concert in Tokyo in the fall of 2025. She asked that the music be in some way inspired by Bach. Fantasy is in two movements, Longing and Dance of Time. The first movement flows through a series of harmonies using constant running eighth notes, reminiscent of many of Bach’s Preludes. As I found myself improvising, I realized that the structure of the piece did not fall into a particular form. Rather, it evolved into a free-form fantasy that embodied a sense of longing. In contrast, the second movement’s running eighth notes are quicker and more energetic as they dance between the time meters of 7/8, 5/8, 6/8 and 3/4. As often happens when composing, without conscious intent, many of the harmonic sequences in the first movement present themselves in the second movement wearing as it were, new clothes." - F.H.
