The high level of creativity achieved by Konitz's artistry made him one of the most influential jazz saxophone soloists of his era. Born in Chicago, October 13, 1927, Lee Konitz studied clarinet as a boy, but soon switched to alto saxophone while becoming attracted to the jazz of the 1940s. He joined a dance band that brought him to New York where he connected with pianist/mentor Lennie Tristano and became one of his best students. There began his deep exploration into jazz improvisation. His early encounters with Claude Thornhill, Miles Davis, and Stan Kenton helped develop his style and reputation. For over 70 years, Lee played in clubs and jazz venues experimenting and refining his inventive style leaving a true improvisatory legacy for the world to explore.
